A distinctive part of an industry partnership with GATE is to engage with university researchers on the cutting-edge topics of the day. In our third Industry Partner Workshop, we welcomed GATE-funded researchers to share their latest insights on the following topics:
- Financial decision-making and the “gender investment gap”
- Immigrant women in STEM
- Gender bias in evaluations
- Retirement contributions
- Covering in job applications
- Reporting sexual harassment
Our researchers guided participants through a series of talks on these issues and presented their latest findings.

The personal finance gender divide

GATE-funded researcher and Rotman Assistant Professor, Avni Shah, joined Rowena Chan, head of financial planning at TD Wealth, to discuss a new survey that suggests men and women are different in their approach to investing, budgeting, and personal finance. The panel for BNN Bloomberg’s “Money Talk,” looked at the financial needs of “Lisa,” a new mother who was having trouble finding the time to manage her financial future.

The Risky Rhetoric of Female Risk Aversion

Foundations, corporations, multilateral organizations, and others promoting economic development are increasingly targeting women, in part because women are seen as less likely to engage in risky behavior and more likely to use money prudently. But this stereotype, although seemingly beneficial, can lead to discrimination against women and produce unequal outcomes.

On November 16, 2016, we convened research scholars in our first annual research roundtable to discuss the latest findings on gender and the economy. The event included a keynote address from Professor Julie Nelson, University of Massachusetts, Boston, on “‘Essential Natures’?: The Invention of Risk-Averse Women and Bottom-Line Companies,” an idea blitz of work in progress and a scholarly debate on the value of quotas.
